2008-09 Print Competition |

 The Wisconsin Imaging and Photographic Association (WIPA) presented their awards for the best commercial photography in Wisconsin for 2008, at their annual Vice Presidents Dinner on Saturday. Each year the association hosts a print competition to honor its members for achievement in seven categories of commercial photography.
This year’ competition yielded an unprecedented number of wins for one photographer. Mike Miller, photographer for Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee entered six photographs in five categories and all six entries won an award, including five for First Place! “This is actually very humbling because there were so many great prints entered this year” Miller stated after picking up his sixth award of the night. “Any of the other entries could have won, I was pretty lucky”.
Even more unusual, Miller tied for First Place in the Open category with himself! The independent panel of three judges, viewing the prints without knowing the identity of the photographers, could not decide which print was the strongest and awarded two of Miller’s entries First Place.
Miller’s print titled Bucket Seats depicted a rusting hulk of a classic old automobile with rays of light from the setting sun streaking across the gutted interior, tied for First. His other entry in the same division titled Erin was equally strong for different reasons and deadlocked the judges over First Place.
Topping off this historic accomplishment, Mike Miller also took home the Best Of Show award for his photo titled Erin. This print featured an overhead view of a woman in repose in a perfectly still pool of water, which reflected a beautiful deep blue sky. The panel of judges again had a difficult time choosing just one “Best” but felt the photograph perfectly captured a unique moment from life, and was the strongest image among all of the other First Place winners.
The award winning prints were on exhibit in the upstairs dinning area at the Milwaukee Public Market through March 31, 2009.
